PA Imaging
PA Imaging makes breast cancer screening painless and suitable for almost all women, with 3D images of the blood vessels in the breast based on light and sound instead of X-rays.
”PA Imaging is a University of Twente spin-off based in Enschede, founded in late 2010 to develop medical imaging equipment based on photoacoustics, starting with mammography. The company builds on research by Professors Srirang Manohar, Wiendelt Steenbergen and Ton van Leeuwen, among others. PA Imaging develops 3D photoacoustic ultrasound (3D PAUS) imaging of the breast: short, low-energy infrared laser pulses cause haemoglobin in the blood to emit ultrasound, which is converted into a 3D image of the blood vessels in the breast, including the vascular growth around tumours. The examination is painless, requires no contrast agent, can be repeated as often as needed and is suitable for almost all women, including young women. According to the company, it also leads to fewer false-positive results, and therefore fewer unnecessary biopsies. The system is currently in clinical evaluation in preparation for CE marking. Achmea has been an investor in PA Imaging since 2017.
