Legal services are expensive. And the number of legal questions people face keeps growing each year. With AlexAI we’re trying to make it more efficient—and, through that, more affordable and more widely available. We do this by supporting legal professionals with a time-saving AI-tool: from analyzing cases and summarizing legal documents to strategizing and even drafting formal communications.
Not at all. I started out with a broader interest in AI and its practical applications. And while exploring different domains, I came into contact with Stichting Achmea Rechtsbijstand (SAR), one of the largest legal aid organizations in the Netherlands. And I realized: if we can combine their sheer scale of data and expertise with AI, we can create something incredibly valuable here.
In law you can’t be wrong. It has to be watertight, accuracy is everything. There’s no room for hallucinations or guesses. Open large language models (LLMs) are impressive, but they aren’t always reliable. They might invent case law or misinterpret statutes. That’s simply not acceptable when people’s rights are on the line.
Well, I wasn’t a legal expert. That made diving into this world both exciting and humbling. I needed help understanding the legal domain, and Achmea made it easy to tap into the right people and resources. I was able to test my hypotheses, speak to experts in the field, and build a working prototype in record time.
I really like creating things. But not just anything—I want to create things that are actually valuable to people. Things that solve real problems. And AI is one of the most fascinating technologies of our time, it’s powerful, but also complex. And I love that. I love combining technical innovation with real, everyday human needs.
